Knowledge Booklets
At Harris Invictus Academy Croydon, every student is provided with a Knowledge Booklet for each subject. These booklets contain the essential knowledge, vocabulary, concepts and information that students are expected to learn and remember throughout their studies. Carefully designed by subject specialists, they provide students with a clear guide to the core curriculum content needed for success in lessons, assessments and examinations.
Knowledge Booklets play a central role in our approach to teaching and learning. We believe that learning is most effective when students regularly revisit important knowledge over time. Through retrieval practice and repeated review, students strengthen their long-term memory, enabling them to recall what they have learned with greater confidence and accuracy. This allows students to build secure foundations for future learning and make stronger connections between topics.
Each booklet includes carefully sequenced knowledge alongside opportunities for self-quizzing and independent study. Students are taught how to use their Knowledge Booklets effectively in lessons and at home. A key part of this is the use of ‘Look, Cover, Write, Check’ activities, where students review information, cover it, attempt to recall it from memory and then check their accuracy. This simple but powerful strategy helps students commit important knowledge to long-term memory and develop effective revision habits.
Knowledge Booklets are used regularly for homework and revision, helping students take ownership of their learning beyond the classroom. By engaging with their booklets frequently, students develop greater independence, resilience and confidence in their studies. We encourage all students to take pride in their Knowledge Booklets, keep them in excellent condition and use them consistently as part of their daily learning routine.
