SMSC, PSHE, RSE
Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural.
We view SMSC development at our Academy as an extremely important part of all students’ education and personal life experience. We believe that it should be embedded in all that we do at the Academy, through subject areas, learning hubs, student leadership, enrichment programmes, extracurricular events and the ethos. Although many aspects of SMSC is taught indirectly as part of the specific subject curriculum children receive at Invictus, it is also developed and focused on in other areas of school life. As well as our extra-curricular activities and regular external speakers, we also explicitly cover SMSC as part of our tutor and assembly programme. Section 2: Principles
The SMSC curriculum covers the following areas:
Spiritual- Is to explore the non-physical aspect to our world which includes, human values, respect for each other and the planet. This aspect of SMSC is a journey through the world using imagination as well as creativity, developing the skills of reflection and contemplation.
Moral- Students are faced with ethical dilemmas and questions, encouraged to discuss what they believe to be the correct and give reasoned views. Through doing this they will develop a sense of moral judgement i.e. what is right and wrong.
Social- Students will learn communication and team work skills within this aspect of SMSC. They will look at conflict resolution between individuals, within communities or on a wider scale.
Cultural- Students will understand the differing influences on culture; they will study the British Values of understanding, acceptance and respect, as well as celebrate diversity.
