Curriculum Summary of KS3 Drama at Harris Invictus

Drama is a course which will promote a student’s enthusiasm for exploring a variety of theatre styles and develop a wider awareness of the world around them. The course will encourage the positive development of interpersonal skills such as increasing self-confidence and the resilience involved in taking a risk; the reciprocity to collaborate and learn in diverse teams and in developing reflective thinking skills. These are all crucial for the world of employment.

The course focuses on the performance of theatre genres from various time periods and cultures; however students will also be encouraged to develop a range of theatrical skills beyond this. For example, students will have the opportunities to create and rehearse their own pieces of drama as well as improving their literacy skills through evaluating performances both verbally and through extended written work. The focus on these skills will improve students’ understanding of theatre on a wider scale and equip them with the skills needed for GCSE and beyond.

Year 7 introduces Drama students to the key acting skills needed in order to create and present a believable character on stage. The course also offers students the chance to explore physical theatre and to perform from a script. It includes an introduction to Shakespeare, develops students’ team work, communication and leadership skills through the creation of performances throughout the year. Students will also begin to develop evaluation skills through verbal and written tasks.

Year 8 focuses on using the skills gained in year 7 to explore a wider variety of theatrical genres and skills such as: advanced characterisation skills; storytelling techniques; Italian Commedia Dell’ Arte and advanced script work. Year 8 will also continue to develop students’ written and verbal literacy through evaluating rehearsal processes, creative ideas and their impact on performances.
