Introduction to the HIAC Curriculum

Introduction to the HIAC Curriculum

Curriculum Intent

The curriculum is ambitious, broad and balanced and will focus on making sure that students develop a deep body of knowledge. This knowledge will primarily come from the national curriculum, but will also identify opportunities to go beyond this. The focus in our curriculum planning will be the development of subject-specific substantive and  disciplinary knowledge and literacy. We also ensure that all students develop the subject skills needed to apply and make sense of the knowledge that they have gained.

Our curriculum intends to prepare all our students, in a rapidly changing world, for the next step in their lives. We aim to develop the confidence and talents of all our students to ensure they are well-equipped to excel in higher or further education, or training. Our curriculum will make sure that they are ready to meet the challenges of employment.

Our challenging curriculum will provide all students with a wide range of educational experiences and opportunities. Through the academic curriculum, commitment to the E-Bacc, and wider school life, we intend to guarantee that all students continue their development into well-rounded citizens, capable of contributing positively to their communities.

Our curriculum is compliant with our duty in terms of the Equality Act 2010 and the Special Educational Needs Regulations 2014.

You can find our full Curriculum Policy here and our SEN policy

Key Stage 4

Students at Harris Invictus Academy Croydon start their GCSE in Year 10. GCSE courses will form the basis of the curriculum at Key Stage 4.  Good advice and guidance on option choices is crucial at this stage.  In the spring term of year 9, the Academy will be addressing “choices and pathways”. Additionally, the Academy staff will interview students, where possible and parents/carers will have the opportunity to receive up-to-date advice and guidance in order to support their son’s/daughter’s options at this stage. Coordinators and Subject Leads will support students in making their choices and will use Academy data and other information to help advise them on the most appropriate choices.  We anticipate that students will be allowed to choose from the option blocks set up and where possible all students should be given their first choice.

Core subjects that are compulsory for all students at Key Stage 4 are:

  • English (GCSE)
  • Maths (GCSE)
  • Science Combined (GCSE)
  • Religious Studies
  • Physical Education

Students will be able to choose from the following options at Key Stage 4:

  • History
  • Geography
  • Psychology
  • Sociology
  • Computer Science
  • Business Studies
  • Art, Craft and Design
  • French
  • Spanish
  • Drama
  • Design and Technology
  • Performing Arts
  • Physical Education
  • Religious Studies
  • Music
  • Triple Science
